Stone in Art
“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” Michelangelo
Stones of all types can be found in Washington's State Art Collection: granite, basalt, limestone, marble, and alabaster, to name a few. Some are transformed by carving and polishing, while others hold their natural shapes, colors, and textures.
“Stone carving is easy – it’s the stone that’s hard.” Ongis Mutan
