ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sarsi Bend is part of artist Louis Hafermehl's series of abstract geometric artworks that explore and observe the movement, patterns, and forms that result from changing daylight. This piece uses aluminum foil to reflect light that shifts as the viewer moves around the piece.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with South Seattle Community College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist C. Louis Hafermehl (1916-1989) created expressive landscape and abstract paintings.

Hafermehl was born in Kansas. He studied art at Bethany College in Kansas, the Chicago Art Institute, and at the Art Students League in New York City. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Hafermehl taught art at the University of Washington for twenty-six years, until the early 1980s when he retired to Kansas.
