The landscape painting No Words or Letters by Northwest artist Leland Standley highlights atmospheric depth. It is comprised of gestural brushstrokes and rich gradations of color. Standley noted that his works "describe that area between comprehension and awe...I try to paint that boundary."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Spokane Community College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Northwest painter Leland Standley (1933-2016) created gestural and expressive landscapes. Describing his artistic process, Leland noted "I paint in the spirit that celebrates the union of humankind with nature". He was a resident of Vashon Island in South Puget Sound, Western Washington, for over 25 years.
