ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Lion is a monotype print created by artist Rita Chavez. She states that animal figures are common in her artwork, and notes: "my Mexican heritage has very strong ties with the animal image, not only in myth but also in the reality of our historical antiquity." A monotype is a process in which ink is layered onto a plexiglass surface and scraped away by hand to reveal the image.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Auburn School District.
