ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Angelita Surmon created Pinning Thoughts to a Target by combining and layering handmade paper, stenciled imagery, and gestural painting. Inspired by an essay by poet Naomi Shihab Nye, Surmon intended that her painting "show those times when our bodies outwardly reveal our internal workings".

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Kent School District.

Northwest artist Angelita Surmon creates paintings, prints and glassworks inspired by intricate structures found in nature. Surmon notes, "I like to dance on the line between representation and abstraction, and the natural world is my best teacher."
