ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Bunny Landscape No. 1' by Adrain Chesser and Timothy White Eagle (Shasta and Mohave CRIT) is an extended photographic ritual project. It was conceived as a transformative rite of passage. The landscape images in the series were made during a vulnerable time on a road trip back to the PNW, across the U.S. Chesser notes, "The landscape in a general way has always brought me such peace especially at dusk... Whenever I would feel vulnerable, I would embody the alter ego Bunny and perform a ritual with the intention of transforming the vulnerability into a strength... I performed Bunny rituals all the way across the U.S. just to stave off the despair."

This artwork is part of a curated collection of Northwest-based artists by Dawna Holloway at the UW Medical Center Northwest in North Seattle, Western Washington. The local art selection committee wanted artworks that would create a welcoming, peaceful environment for the patient floors of the new Behavioral Health Teaching facility. The photographs were printed onto Acrovyn, an industrial wall covering. They span floor-to-ceiling to bring lush nature inside, transforming the residents’ sterile surroundings.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University of Washington.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Adrain Chesser is a self-taught photographer. His first critical success came with the body of work “I have something to tell you,” a personal exploration of what it means to disclose life-altering news. He has published two book of photography, and his work is in the collections of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Portland Museum of Art, The Norton Museum of Art in Florida, and others.

Timothy White Eagle’s art is grounded in transformational ritual and storytelling. He uses objects, photography, performance, and installed spaces to craft healing experiences. White Eagle is a queer, mixed-race artist of Shasta, Mohave (Colorado River Indian Tribes), and European heritage. Given up for adoption, he was raised in a small, all-white “sundown town” in Western Washington by a deeply religious, Mormon father. He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater. At age 25, White Eagle became a protege to Shoshone/Metis Elder Clyde Hall and continues to work closely with Clyde, supporting traditional ceremonial work.
