ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A Sea of Promise by Moses Sun is part of his 21 Chambers series of meditative digital paintings and drawings. The series reflects an inner world of hope and forgiveness in a time of crisis. Sun notes, "Each image peels away painful memories in a tornado of color, texture, and line. They represent courage, love, magic, soul, and blackness in a time of introspection. Transparency is used to camouflage and distort the past until it contorts into a garden of playful shapes meant to invite the viewer in.”

This artwork is part of a curated collection by Tami Landis in September 2023 for Ferndale High School, in Whatcom County, Northeastern Washington. The collection is rooted in a creative spirit of admiring and honoring our connection to the lands and sea of this region. The artworks also share a theme of diversity and inclusivity. They speak to all walks of life, in all seasons, and act as a symbol of welcoming for years to come.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Ferndale School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Seattle-based artist, curator and community organizer, Moses Sun fuses hip-hop, jazz, afro-futurism, and the black southern diaspora of his childhood. The result is a mix of visuals that blurs the lines between digital and tactile art. Sun draws much of his inspiration from Black, African, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latinx diasporas. His interdisciplinary practice comes from the hip-hop ethos of grinding in the studio, creating multiple tracks (series of works) that he remixes into abstractions expressed on various surfaces, screens, assemblage, prints, plywood, and large-scale murals.
