Location: Bellevue College, Bellevue

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist team Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio created the site-specific sculpture Endless for Bellevue College in Western Washington. The monumental sculpture is made of hundreds of welded steel rods — it is both large and solid, as well as intricate and delicate-looking with its blurred ending points. Seeming to dissolve into space, it suggests the infinite nature of knowledge. It is located outside of the Science building, as a metaphor for scientific progress and discovery. The artists describe this progress as "our endless search for solutions to ever more complex problems."

Check out the grades 9-12 lesson plan for this artwork, linked as a PDF under "Lesson Plans and Documents".

The local selection committee of Bellevue College faculty, staff, and students wanted an artwork that would lighten and soften the campus hardscape and respond to the new science building’s design. They also wanted it to be about science, to be about experiencing the space differently, and to have a variety of interpretations.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Bellevue College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lead Pencil Studio is an art and architecture studio founded by Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo in Seattle, Washington. They create site-specific installation art and non-functional architecture. Mihalyo says their work is “wedged between architecture—the practical art form—and artwork, which is a less practical form of creativity.”
Both Han and Mihalyo earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in architecture from the University of Oregon in Eugene.
