ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Free Flight is a mixed media triptych wall sculpture by artist Katherine Holzknecht. It is comprised of three abstract elements. The forms represent clouds, birds, and wings. The artist notes this piece is inspired by the feeling of freedom. She states, “Birds are like free spirits who can go wherever they desire. As they fly about, the sky must seem huge to them, and the possibilities are endless.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Northwest artist Katherine Holzknecht creates artworks in cast cement, mixed material wall assemblage, watercolor paints, and stained glass.

Holzknecht earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in Textile Design and Fiber Arts from the University of Washington in Seattle. She lives and works in Woodinville, Washington.
