ABOUT THE ARTWORK
‘An Lewis’ is a panoramic landscape painting by artist Susan Christian. The artist’s travels to the Isle of Lewis, in northern Scotland, inspired the imagery. She chose a wide composition to emphasize how our peripheral vision influences the way we see. She notes, “You can see a lot more out of the sides of your eyes than you really pay that much attention to…If you're interested in land, in the world around you, you will begin to notice that you see it in big sideways sweeps. I love this.”
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Vancouver School District.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Northwest artist Susan Christian creates abstract and landscape paintings, employing a variety of materials and a diverse visual vocabulary while balancing color and form. The inspiration for some of her work can be traced back to her travels in Vietnam in the late 90's, where she became "smitten" by the linearity of the landscape's "marks." Christian is based in Oyster Bay in Olympia, Washington, where she converted an old oyster factory into her home and studio.
